Sore subject

September12

Uggghhh… I got a molar extracted and “crown lengthening” done on an adjacent molar last Friday.  I expected some diminishing pain for a few days, but not this.  I’ve had a constant level of acute, throbbing pain for 7 straight days.  And I’ve learned that plain old Motrin works better than Vicodin or Darvocet.  My dentist tells me it’s the crown lengthening that causes the pain… they basically sear away your gum line to create a better fit for the crown.  I’ve never been so painfully aware of smiling, eating or talking in my whole life.

Just had to rant… time to go take some more Motrin.  And sorry if my phone calls are short lately… it really hurts to talk for any length of time.  E-mail is good!

Be prepared….

September3

In the wake of all the hurricanes coming and the fact that September is “National Preparedness Month” I thought I’d put my plug in for taking time to be prepared in the off chance of an emergency. You don’t have to go nuts (like we….okay Doug…did) and stockpile lots of food, water and supplies, but a 3-day-supply minimum is highly recommended. Anyway, click the graphic below for some tips on how to:

  • Get a kit
  • Make a plan
  • Be informed

Other sites that have great info:

Here are some tips I followed that may help:

  • Make sure your flashlights and/or radios have a hand crank instead of relying on, or paying for, batteries.
  • Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) are a great way to store food safely long-term.
  • Water is the trickiest to deal with, but the most important.  Go with a camping microfilter or store jugs of water in your basement (or both).
  • Amazon has some pre-made “disaster preparedness” backback kits for 1 to 4 people.
  • Also, remember to back-up your pictures and video to DVDs and take a copy to second location in a locked cabinet/drawer at least every 6 months.

If you want to take preparedness to the “next” level, sign up for survival school training. I’m going in the Spring of 2009, so let me know if you’re interested!

Preparedly yours,

Doug
